With a background of industrial design, I have worked on how to create better or fresh user experience for a while. I’m interested in it because a better interaction and memory of using can enhance the communication between the audience and products. For my further study in interaction design, I also I want to concentrate on user experience studies, since either the information visualization or the affordance of an object is about how the audience perceives the message provided by the interaction and communication of the experience.

For my point of view, interaction design is a practice of creating and enhancing the communication between a product and its users. I believe the product is not only the carrier and medium of satisfying people’s functional needs, but also the extension of people’s emotions and experience in the material aspect. I'm interested in improving and optimizing user experience and by which way the users’ emotional needs can be satisfied. So I intend to leave more flexibility and space for users to apply the product in a variety of creative ways, achieving multiple user experience so that they could be closer to the product and enjoy the process of using it.

I'm a data fan and an interaction analyst: curious about people, knowledge, and behavior; technology, science, and the future. It is ours to make.

Having a background of indusrtrial design for five years, I believe there is much more to be learned from interaction design. I like to observe and study people’s behavior, which is just at the core of interaction design. Studying on the emotional responses of target users, it’s not just design a product that easy, you need to interpret all the feedbacks and translate them into useful data, which make the system design more efficient. That probably the amazing part of interaction design which I like the most.

Xu, Shang (Sharon)

Master of Fine Arts in Interaction Design, Student
Expect to graduate: 2016 Spring

I am interested in the relationship between human behavior and products, so I think that Interaction Design is the best path to achieve it. I hope that I’ll be able to offer users a better experience with my product design after having a better understanding of Interaction Design.

I have to say that interaction design is more than anyone thought it could be. It has already exist in our everyday life, which focused on how to enable people to take action by removing frictions, making decisions less complex, improving the efficiency of our study and work, etc. For me, a student who have 4-year industrial design background, interaction design just beyond design, it emphasizes the man's psychological phenomena and activities, also refers to technology of multi-field. Those attractive elements give me a brand new vision of my study and research.

As technology continues to evolve, industrial design and interface design have become increasingly integrated, each becoming more responsive to the other, creating a more seamless user experience.  Many of todays most innovative products are primarily vessels for deep, flexible, user interfaces that define the products purpose.  As technology and culture continue to progress the line between physical and digital interface will continue to blur.

The fundamental concepts of user-centered design rooted in Interaction Design (IXD) motivate me to pursue my master degree in this field. The user experience design attracts me most because it focuses on user’s feelings. On the other hand, I believe each individual possesses the design creativity, and customer should not be treated as just passive user but should also be regarded as an active designer. My ultimate goal is to develop and create new “product” (physical product, environment, platform, system, and service) which can facilitate the interaction between human and technology thereby maximize the user’s needs and expectations, and furthermore could motivate user to add his own design insights. With a four-year background in industrial design, on the way of pursing the goal, I’d like to learn the new approaches and strategies of performing the IXD by considering the product ecosystem from a holistic perspective.

Goodwin, Jillian

Master of Fine Arts in Interaction Design, Student
Expect to graduate: 2017 Spring
Email: jgoodwi at purdue dot edu

After starting out in Industrial Design, Jillian ended up getting her undergraduate degree in Visual Communications Design. "I feel that having some experience in both fields gives me an advantage towards developing stronger Interaction experiences. Although I haven't decided on a focus within Interaction Design yet, I am looking forward to improving the ways in which people use or interact with any element of their lives."

Interaction Design is an interdisciplinary field. It draws science, art and people together, and influences our everyday life. In this subject, I am highly interested in data visualization, web based application design, and seek to understand the impact of human cognition and ergonomics factors in learning and designing processes.
